Should the City of Palo Alto adopt an ordinance setting a local minimum wage that is higher than the State minimum wage?
State law currently requires a minimum wage for all employees of not less than $9 per hour, which will increase to $10 per hour after January 1, 2016. Cities have the local authority to require a higher minimum wage for employees working within the City. The Policy and Services Committee of the City Council has asked staff to analyze and make recommendations to the City Council on a citywide minimum wage ordinance. The cities of Mountain View, Sunnyvale and San Jose have recently adopted local minimum wage ordinances. All of the responses will be part of the information packet provided to the Policy and Services Committee for their meeting on April 28 as they consider their recommendation to the full Council.
