What brings you downtown? (select all that apply)
Shopping/dining/entertainment

Generally, what is your experience with street performers downtown?
Generally negative

In what ways do street performers enhance your experience downtown? (1=not important, 5=very important)?

In what ways do street performers detract from your experience downtown? (1=not important, 5=very important)?

Are there other ways street performers detract from your experience downtown?
They give downtown a shabby look, in addition to impeding traffic. They do not add "cachet" to Asheville. Having beggars on the sidewalk is undesirable. The fact that the beggars are playing instruments does not change the fact they are beggars.

What are your thoughts on the amount of street performances happening downtown?
There are too many.

Which areas would you like to see more?
Have designated, off-sidewalk areas for buskers that are highlighted for tourists, like in specific, marked, grassy areas of Pack Square park. There needs to be adequate space for people to comfortably gather to listen/watch.

Which areas would you like to see less?
On the sidewalks of core of the AVL tourist AVL areas--i.e., Haywood St., Wall St., Battery Pk. Ave., Broadway, Patton Lexington and College.

What are your thoughts on street performers selling merchandise downtown?
Appropriate at designated locations (similar to pushcart program)

Are there things that the street performers might consider that would enhance your experience?
See above. Many are scruffy looking and of limited talent. If we are going to present music, it should be performaces that reflect best on our city.

Are there issues related to street performances that the City should be considering that are not being addressed?
If buskers are desired by downtown merchants, perhaps they should be encouraged to offer their non-sidewalk spaces for performers of their choosing.

In what ways do street performers enhance your experience downtown? (1=not important, 5=very important)?

In what ways do street performers detract from your experience downtown? (1=not important, 5=very important)?

Are there other ways street performers detract from your experience downtown?
Use of amplification or musicians playing drum kits are obnoxious and skew street performances to the negative.

What are your thoughts on the amount of street performances happening downtown?
There are just the right amount.

Which areas would you like to see more?
South Slope and Pack Park....and Hendersonville :).

Which areas would you like to see less?
Biltmore Ave.

What are your thoughts on street performers selling merchandise downtown?
Should be in association with a street performance permit

Are there things that the street performers might consider that would enhance your experience?
Louder volume may increase the number of people who can hear you, but discourages the number who appreciate you and will give money to you.

Are there issues related to street performances that the City should be considering that are not being addressed?
Amplified sound and drum kit music produce deciels harmful to near-by people, and produces distortion and noise polluntion for others farther away.

Any additional feedback?
The City should take a clear stand on street performance through specific rules and enforcement....promote what's good about it and prevent the negative.

A talent requirement might be nice...some "performers" are really panhandling. We throw tips to the good ones only.

Are there other ways street performers detract from your experience downtown?
The street perfromers in designated areas, are for the most part, fine. However, because the pedestrian audible signals are set at such a low volume, the music from street perfromers can make it impossible to hear the audible signal. There seem to be more and more street performers in undesignated areas. The block the sidewalk. These folks also seem to be more inconsiderate.

What are your thoughts on the amount of street performances happening downtown?
I would like to see less in ___________ area, because ___________________

Which areas would you like to see less?
Pritchard Park area and Bilmore Avenue, between Pack Square and Orange Peeo. Not enough space on sidewak for all of the street performers and pedestrians.

What are your thoughts on street performers selling merchandise downtown?
Other - Seems they should be able to sell where there is enough space to accomodate it.

Are there things that the street performers might consider that would enhance your experience?
People with trap drum sets need to lower the volume. Aren't they supposed to baffle their drum sets. I din't see that happening. I see people cross the street to avoid and I do the same thing. Also volume on electronic instruments often too high.

Are there issues related to street performances that the City should be considering that are not being addressed?
The City should make sure that all audible signals can be heard while street musicians are perfromming. Some street performers are aggressive, usually those who are poor musicians or not in designated areas. I hear there are police in the downtown area, but I never see them walking around to catch this behavior. Maybe they are undercover?

Any additional feedback?
Overall street perfromers in Asheville are an asset. Because of them we get to hear some very good music for the cost of a voluntary contribution. Abbie the Spoon Lady and her group are consumate professionals, as are many others. But I have seen buses unable to drive through the street because the audience is spilling into the street. Perhpas there could be people who monitor this so the police can attend to other issues.

Generally, what is your experience with street performers downtown?
Other - It used to be positive. In the past year, many of the best, regular performers seem to have disappeared, leaving more travelers who sometimes are really poor performers, if not an outright nuisance.

I hadn't realized the sidewalks were getting blocked. I'll be curious to see ideas about how to prevent that from happening. Seems like if that compromise could be reached then the entertainment and cultural value of buskers in downtown Asheville could be preserved.

Comments:
8 extra hours does not have to mean 1 extra hour for each of 8 routes. Also, the description on N1 is misleading. It should say Last Departure 8 PM like all the others. The additional buses run later only on Friday and Saturday AND only when UNCA is in session, so they're not something regular riders can count on and could be withdrawn at any time, the same way the 170 lost runs when Warren Wilson withdrew funding.
