Introduction
The souring economy is spurring a dramatic increase in Sacramento's homeless population. "Oprah," NBC's "Today" show, and CBS News all have been to our community in the last few weeks to focus on "Tent City," a campsite of homeless individuals along the American River. The City Council appropriated nearly $1 million for temporary housing and other services and has closed "Tent City," but an estimated 1,200 homeless individuals continue to live in our city.
How do you think we should address this pressing issue? Should we follow other cities and construct a policed "Tent City"?
Please read the Bee articles about homelessness as well as your neighbors' statements, then tell me what you think. After reviewing comments from you and others, I'll announce additional long-term strategies to address homelessness in Sacramento. You can read about those plans in this forum or in your subscription to email updates to Open Town Hall.
Thank you for helping Sacramento meet this pressing challenge.
