This survey collects public feedback on the Draft Mobility Plan for North Main Avenue. The Draft Mobility Plan reflects extensive stakeholder input received during a 3-day design charrette in May 2015 and reflects a vision for a revitalized, safe corridor.
Thank you for your interest in the North Main Mobility Plan and overall revitalization efforts for the North Main Corridor.
North Main Avenue (US Highway 550) is the primary north-south arterial through the City of Durango and acts as a gateway to the City’s historic downtown. The corridor accommodates high traffic volumes generated by through-traffic and local traffic accessing commercial properties and adjoining residential neighborhoods. The intersections and pedestrian facilities along this corridor provide critical links between residential neighborhoods, commercial areas, community facilities, and recreational amenities. The City desires to enhance mobility along North Main Avenue to improve safety and accessibility, increase walking and biking, encourage redevelopment, and enhance the quality of life for the wide variety of people who depend on this major corridor.
This Mobility Plan is the first step in a longer-term City initiative to revitalize and enhance the North Main corridor for the benefit of the entire community. To begin addressing the challenges in the North Main corridor, City staff has proposed to coordinate a multi-phase approach to create a comprehensive North Main Corridor Redevelopment Plan. To launch this planning process, the City received technical assistance through New Mobility West (NMW), an initiative of the Sonoran Institute, which provides the funding and resources needed to create this Mobility Plan.
The project team facilitated a three-day site visit to gather input on the creation of a Mobility Plan for North Main Avenue. This intensive stakeholder design charrette process, held from May 4 to 6, 2015, provided a vision for a revitalized, safe corridor with efficient traffic flow that fully integrates bicycle and pedestrian facilities. The process focused on identifying the best locations along this corridor for pedestrian and bicycle improvements, prioritized locations for ADA accessible ramps, and the creation of conceptual designs for important improvements.
The vision from the stakeholder design charrette and detailed recommendations to enhance mobility along North Main Avenue are contained in the Draft Mobility Plan. The Plan includes conceptual designs, a prioritized list of mobility improvements, and explores potential reconfigurations of the North Main Avenue corridor. The Plan is broken into three chapters:
- Process Summary
- Analysis and Evaluation
In conjunction with improving infrastructure and public facilities to increase mobility, the City will be exploring incentives and policy options to enable appropriate redevelopment activity along this important corridor in future phases of this redevelopment planning initiative.
Public Comment Process and Contact Information
A Draft Plan has been prepared and the Project Team would like to collect public comment prior to finalizing the document. In order for this survey to be effective, it is very important that you have at least skimmed through the Draft Mobility Plan. You can visit the City's website here for more information about the initiative, or view the Plan here. Also, hard copies of the Plan are available at River City Hall (1235 Camino Del Rio) between 7:30 AM and 4:30 PM, Monday – Friday.
In addition to this online venue for public comments on the draft Plan, City staff is hosting a public meeting on the Draft Mobility Plan on Monday, July 13 at 5:30 PM at the Durango Public Library.
This survey and opportunity to comment will be open to the public until Friday, July 17.
After the public comment period, the comments will be sent to the project consultant and, where appropriate, incorporated into the final draft of the Plan. We anticipate that the final draft of the Plan will be available in August 2015.
